Suggestions for Implementation

Let your congregation know that you have implemented a new electronic payment option and are now able to accept ATM, debit and credit card payments for offerings, tithe and other donations for those who prefer to use their cards.

Simply announce the new option and keep your congregation aware of it with low-key reminders. It is not necessary to actively promote the service. Those who want to use their ATM, debit or credit cards will do so without encouragement. If you actively promote or solicit credit card donations, you might trigger some overspending and irresponsible credit card use by some. You are implementing the program not to encourage more debt, but for the convenience and respect of those who want to use their ATM, debit or credit card for their church donations.

Make sure the treasurer pays attention to the credit card donations and watches for possible misuse by those who have trouble managing their finances. Responsible stewardship is not just about giving money, and a tactful educational intervention by the Pastor could be very helpful to the person.

The following are some ideas for the initial announcement, and ways for maintaining awareness that your church is able to accept electronic payments  for tithe, offerings and other donations:

  1. Make a simple verbal announcement at appropriate times, for the first few weeks when you implement the service.

  2. Put an insert in program\bulletin announcing the service.
Sample insert PDF version. Sample copy and paste content for insert.

  3. Print a weekly statement in bulletin such as: “If you would prefer to make your church donations or pay your tithe with your ATM or debit card instead of writing a check or having to carrying cash, or want your offerings, tithe or other donations charged to your credit card, please complete the Electronic Donation Payment Authorization form and put it in the offering plate.”

  4. Make a supply of the pamphlets Debit and Credit Card Donor Reference Guide and Credit Card Donations and Responsible Stewardship and put them in the literature rack or make them readily visible and available.

  5. Make a supply of the Electronic Donation Payment Authorization forms and put them in the pews along with the tithe envelopes and other forms, or in the literature rack.

  6. Reformat the Electronic Donation Payment Authorization forms and print them on the back of the tithe envelope, on an insert in the bulletin, or on a tear off part of the bulletin.
